You’ve heard the name, now get to know the wine

Chateauneuf du Pape is a wine that at first, can sound intimidating. We’re here to demystify it for you and then, should you wish to try some for yourself, we’ll present you with the best deals to bring this special wine to you at a great price.

So, first things first, what’s in a name? It’s quite simple actually, this wine is named after the village it is located in which literally translates to ‘New castle of the Pope’. This is part of the larger, Rhone wine region in France.

A total of 18 grapes are approved for use in Chateauneuf du Pape, which is almost unheard of in other wines. The predominate grape variety is Grenache.

You may have heard of the Grenache grape, as it is used in several other popular wines including certain blends of Rioja.

So what does it actually taste like?

Well according to the experts, its likeability comes largely from its full body and sensation of sweetness which comes from its high levels of alcohol and glycerol. Expect to taste plump, red fruits, black cherry, baking spice flavours and a hit of white pepper, developing into jammier, stewed fruit flavours in hotter regions.

Chateauneuf du Pape will often follow the GSM grape formation (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre). This is because alone, grenache is quite a light bodied grape. It needs a bit of help from supporting grapes to develop its trademark rich and full-bodied taste.

So, now you’ve learned a bit about it – are you tempted to try this luscious wine?
