Highest seen is the most expensive we have seen Babich Family Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2011 all year.
Sauvignon Blanc we all know well. Sauvignon Gris? That's another matter entirely, rare in Bordeaux and unheard of as a single varietal. This is a fabulous, spicy white with real breadth and zip of citrus from the great Chai au Quai cellars. Chief winemaker at Le Chai au Quai Jean-Marc Sauboua is very much the 'Sauvignon Blanc King', having won many prizes. This is his fabulous 'Gris' version made in the magnificent 2010 vintage. The grapes are all from the well-drained limestone soils of Bordeaux's Chateau Le Coin, where JMS worked with James McDonald (the Kiwi based at Marlborough's renowned Hunter Estate). Sauvignon Blanc is the forte of both these winemakers, so they've brought out a real freshness to balance the broad, apricot richness of this wine. A mere splash was oak fermented to lend a touch of complexity (no strong oak though), as did a little old-vine Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc.
