Maipo Valley

This is at the heart of the Chilean wine industry, and where some of the first vineyards were planted. It is also one of the main areas where the revival and the new wave of Chilean wine development began back in the 1980s. It is home to some of the oldest wineries, including the biggest names, such as Concha y Toro and Santa Rita.

The region spreads south of Santiago, and across from the coast to the foothills of the Andes. It is a dry, hot area, best known for the production of some of the country’s best Cabernet Sauvignon. Traditionally the main vineyards were in the central part of Maipo, however with expansion and experimentation into new, cooler areas, the sub regions of Alto Maipo, nestled up against in the Andes in the east, and the Pacific Maipo, close to the coast, and the range of coastal mountains, are also producing beautifully structured and elegant reds, from the Cabernet Sauvignon, but also Carmenere and Syrah.
