About Nuits St Georges Wines

One of the best known appellations of Burgundy, this lies on the eastern side, and is the most southern of the Cote de Nuits communes, lying just north of the Cote de Beaune. It is the second largest appellation in the Cote d’Or, just slightly smaller than the largest one, Beaune; whilst it has no Grand Crus, it has the highest number of Premiers Crus vineyards.

The town of Nuits St Georges is also unofficially the capital of the Cote de Nuits, with the majority of the established negociants and major wine companies based here.

The wines are generally structured and long-lived; they are less immediately appealing and often need longer to develop than some of their neighbours, but the wait is worth it, for the structure and intensity of style. The wines vary in style from north to south of Nuits, with the vineyards close to Vosne Romanee producing the more perfumed, silky styles of wine, whilst the wines of the more southern vineyards are fuller, longer- lived and more masculine in style. Once again, a knowledge of the good negociants and producers is important in this area.

The best of the Rhone? - Guigal
Guigal was established shortly after the Second World War by Étienne Guigal who started with another famous Rhone name, Vidal Fleury. As testament to his success, Guigal now in fact owns Vidal Fleury too. The Guigal name really came to the fore when wine critic, Robert Parker led the charge in heaping praise upon their Côte-Rôtie wines. Guigal have since purchased Château d'Ampuis in the 90s, which is now their headquarters and fittingly, the home where Étienne Guigal’s wife used to work as a…
