About Pouilly-Fuisse Wines

At the heart of the Maconnais region, is the region of Pouilly, which has perfect vineyards for the cultivation of Chardonnay. With a warm climate, and on limestone soils, the potential for the wines is great, and there are some superb examples. Unfortunately, over recent years the fame and demand for Pouilly-Fuisse, like so many other Burgundy regions, has meant that some producers have traded quality for volume to cope with demand from both UK and US. At best the wines have a rich, fleshy ripeness, a ripe, creamy concentration, with a warm, honeyed edge, and are delicious. Watch the producer is the key message here, yet again.

The appellations of Pouilly-Loche and Pouilly-Vinzelles lie close to Pouilly-Fuisse and have added the famed Pouilly name to their villages, to add to their status. In general the wines are softer and with less character.

Guigal was established shortly after the Second World War by Étienne Guigal who started with another famous Rhone name, Vidal Fleury.
