Vacqueyras

Another village, neighbouring Gigondas, which lies within 17km proximity to its more famous relative Chateauneuf. Vacqueyras was elevated from Cotes du Rhone villages status in 1990, due to the consistent high quality, and ever improving quality levels of its wines.

About & Food Matching

Vacqueyras styles of wine tend to be a little more full one, and sometimes rustic, than their Gigondas neighbour, partly due to the fact that whilst Gigondas has to be made with a minimum 80% of the rich, fruity Grenache, in Vacqueyras, this goes down to 50%. Therefore the wines are often fuller, fleshier, and feistier with the addition of a greater proportion of the spicily structured Syrah and the fleshy, firmly structured Mourvedre. There is also a little rose produced.

Style: rich, full-flavoured, intensely savoury and spicy reds, packed with dense, black fruit, and pepper character.

Grapes: Grenache ( min 50%), plus mainly Syrah and Mourvedre.

Good with: very similar in style to Gigondas, it’s a great wine to go with lamb casserole, braised beef, venison, and game dishes. A great partner to garlic and herb crusted lamb with Mediterranean vegetables.
